Our Neighbourhood

Named after three defence batteries that were built at various times on the point of land that is now known as the leafy and picturesque Princes Park, the historic streetscapes of Battery Point hold many stories of Tasmania’s convict and colonial past.

A patchwork of grand mansions and the quaint workers’ cottages built to allow the workers to live nearby to their residences of employment, Battery Point was once the haunt of sailors, shipwrights, whalers, publicans and house servants.  Today it is a charming heritage suburb dotted with local cafes and restaurants, and the perfect base from which to explore Southern Tasmania.
