Running almost the entire length of Battery Point, Hampden Road is now referred to by locals as ‘the Village’ owing to the heritage façade shop fronts lining the block between Kelly Street and Arthur Circus.
Butchers, bakers, dressmakers, shoe makers, hotels and general stores, the shops in Hampden Road were a meeting place for Battery Point Housewives. With no refrigeration in those days, they had to shop daily. Where the post office is now was Mr Swalwell’s grocer shop with deliveries made by horse and cart if necessary. The site of Jackman and McRoss has always been a bakery, with locals and visitors alike lining up to peruse cabinets filled with delicious fresh baked treats and award winning bread each day.
