Charles Joseph Fox was the original occupant of Grande Vue, commissioning its construction in 1906 as a gracious family home for him and his wife Florence, and their children. Charles worked as a Manufacturer’s Agent importing goods onto the island, and whilst we continue to research the Fox family history, it appears he was successful in his business endeavours, as evidenced by the size and scale of ‘Coolangatta’, now Grande Vue.
Charles Fox died in 1941 and his wife put the house up for auction, described in local newspapers as an “attractive Brick Residence situate No. 8 Mona Street, Battery Point, most substantially built on solid stone foundations, containing 10 main rooms and usual offices, with extensive verandas and balconies. Situate in one of Hobart’s picked positions, commanding a marvellous view. Splendid proposition for 3 residential flats, guest house, hospital, or private home.”
