Named for Captain James Kelly, the Pilot and Harbourmaster of the River Derwent in the early 1800s and Battery Point resident known for being a skilled seaman, successful whaling entrepreneur and daring adventurer, pleasingly the Kelly Room offers far more luxurious conditions than those experienced by Kelly when he circumnavigated the island in 1816 in an open 5 oared whaling boat, naming Port Davey and Macquarie Harbour on the West Coast along the way!
Guests of Grande Vue can now take a leisurely stroll down to Salamanca Place and Hobart’s waterfront to explore the many cafes, bars and restaurants within a stone’s throw of our hotel, along the Kelly Street route alighting the well-trodden sandstone ‘Kelly’s Steps’ that once provided easy access to the waterfront workers living on Kelly’s allotment that he subdivided for workers’ cottages.
