Named for Tasmania’s first cleric Reverend Robert Knopwood, who arrived in Hobart in 1804 and shortly thereafter was granted many hectares of land between Salamanca and Battery Point, the Knopwood Room is positioned on the top floor of Grande Vue, taking in ever changing views of timtumili minanya/River Derwent.
Known as a kind and active preacher who travelled his parish on horseback delivering sermons across Southern Tasmania, Knopwood also defied the stereotypes of a man of the cloth, becoming known as a ‘good time fella’ with hefty liquor tabs supporting aspersions that Knopwood had a penchant for the finer things in life and a lust for women!
It was these traits that eventually ran Knopwood foul of conservative Governor George Arthur, who effectively banished the cleric to manage a smaller parish across the river, acquiring his prime land for next to nothing in the process.
