Stowell, located at the end of Stowell Avenue, is one of the earliest homes in Battery Point, built by John Montagu in 1831 on land granted to him by his uncle, Lieutenant Governor Arthur. Despite the nepotism Montagu enjoyed as a result of his Uncle’s position, many in the community viewed him as a selfish, greedy and self-interested man and in 1839 Stowell was sold and Montagu returned to London.
Stowell remained a private residence until 1917, when it was sold and repurposed as a private hospital boasting the latest in technology, including electric lights, bells, telephones, radiators and reading lamps. The Commonwealth Government purchased the property in 1945 for CSIRO offices and laboratories, with this presences signalling the beginning of Battery Point’s gentrification.
Sold again in the 1990s, Stowell is now a private residence and enduring landmark of Battery Point.
