Artist, poet and amateur photographer, Mabel Hookey was the first woman journalist in Tasmania. She was born in 1871 at Clarence, in Tasmania and attended the Ladies Grammar School in Hobart. Her mother’s paintings of bush flowers and her sketches of the landscape were an inspiration to Hookey and ignited her love for art. An avid painter, she joined the Art Society of Tasmania in 1893, where she eventually held the position of Vice President. She was also a member of the Royal Society of Tasmania.
Commended for her oil and watercolour paintings, as well as for her drawings, she exhibited across Tasmania, Sydney and Europe, participating in the Old Salon in Paris in 1928 and the British Empire Exhibition in Wemlbledy in 1924.
After a life well-lived, travelling extensively across Tasmania, Sydney, Queensland and the Pacific Islands, and further afield to North Africa, Palestine, England, France, China and Japan, Mabel Hookey spent some of her later years at Grande Vue, when it was known as St Martin’s Rest Home.
